Dennis Gallagher: Forms in Space
Dennis Gallagher was born in 1952, in San Bruno, CA and received his BA and MFA from Fresno State University. He has taught at both the California College of Arts and the San Francisco Art Institute. Gallagher has completed commissions in both the private and public sectors of the Bay Area.
Gallagher's sculptures utilize stacked geometric blocks in ways that paradoxically bring to mind both classical ruins and appealingly functional contemporary household objects. Often precariously stacked or balanced, the solid forms display a remarkable lightness at odds with their medium and size. The scored, gouged, and roughly glazed surfaces of the sculptures exude an appealing tactility that contrasts with the cool hard-edged modernist elegance of their compositional elements.
Dennis Gallagher was interviewed for this film in his Oakland studio as well as on the occasion of his 2006 exhibition at the Rena Bransten Gallery.
